On Thursday, September 17th, 2015 the Rocky Mountain Chapter of APT toured the Historic Dennis Sheedy Mansion. Natalie Lord of Humphries Poli Architects led members around the house and talked about the history of Dennis, the house, and the current project.

Dining Room Built-in

The Mansion was designed by E.T. Carr and William Pratt Feth of Leavenworth Kansas. It was completed in 1892. Dennis Sheedy was a key figure to Denver and Colorado history. He settled in Denver in 1882 after an early entrepreneurial career in setting up mercantile businesses in remote mining areas, transporting goods, and cattle ranching. Upon arriving in Denver, he purchased stock in the Colorado National Bank. As a stockholder he was asked to evaluate failing businesses. Through this endeavor he became president and director of operations for the Globe Smelting & Refining Company. A decade later he purchased the McNamara Dry Goods company with Charles Kountze and became president and general manager. The mercantile was reincorporated the Denver Dry Goods Company and became the biggest retailer in the state.

Dennis Sheedy had a great love of nature, which is reflected in the motifs and materials in the Mansion. There are many wood species, with the main rooms each having different species. The species include: cherry, mahogany, birds eye maple, red oak, sycamore, curly birch, yellow pine, and white pine. He carried the wood into each room’s furniture as well, paying great attention to detail. The house features built-in millwork, fireplaces, stained glass, and tooled leather wall panels.
