The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Association for Preservation Technology (RMC-APT) hosted a member event March 13, 2015 touring the recently renovated Colorado State Capitol. The tour, led by David Wittman, Associate Investigative Engineer at Martin/Martin Engineers, Inc., began in the House of Representatives Chamber where a recent renovation of the gold filigree stenciling was completed. The group then climbed the 99 steps up to the observation deck where Mr. Wittman explained the nearly four year long project to restore the dome. The group was allowed access to climb the spiral cast iron staircase that leads up to the inner structure above the public rotunda, which is adorned with names of those who have gilded the dome over the years. Mr. Wittman explained the complex tasks of incorporating modern technology, historic materials and preservation techniques in the repair process of the gold-gilded sheet metal roofing, cast-iron facade and deteriorated wood and steel windows.
